He enlisted at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, 19th September 1914, stating his occupation as a salesman, and his next of kin as Mrs. Woodward, of 10, Verona Street, Liverpool, Lancashire. He had previously served for eighteen months with the 8th Royal Liverpool Volunteers. He was five feet eight inches in height, had a dark complexion, brown eyes and brown hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had three vaccination marks on his left arm and the second toe on his left foot was missing.
